VANCOUVER 28 November 2025 - Philippine Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin attended the “Thinking Beyond the 51st State: A Conversation with Senator Yuen Pau Woo” at Simon Fraser University on 24 November 2025, as part of the Consular Conversations series organized by SFU’s School for International Studies and moderated by Consul General Ricardo Arredondo of Argentina. Senator Woo is a senator from British Columbia.

The session explored perspectives on Canada’s foreign policy direction, including ways to move beyond continentalist thinking and the “51st state” mindset. Senator Woo emphasized the value of a more independent approach and highlighted the Indo‑Pacific Policy as a means to broaden Canada’s global engagement.

The conversation provided thoughtful insights into the evolving relationship with the United States, the balance between economic resilience and global opportunities, and strategies for fostering new partnerships in Asia while maintaining Canada’s autonomy.END
