30 April 2024, Vancouver – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver participated in the inaugural Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party in South Vancouver on 27 April 2024, organized by Filipino BC and Sunset on Fraser Business Association. The event, which paid homage to legendary hero Lapu-Lapu, was well attended by thousands despite the rain.
Philippine Consul General Arlene T. Magno remarked that the occasion, which brings together Filipinos and Canadians from all walks of life, is as a fitting way to mark 75 years of Philippines-Canada relations, as our history and interaction with one another are anchored on the strength and the essence of our people-to-people ties.
This celebration came just a year after British Columbia officially recognized April 27 as Lapu-Lapu Day, acknowledging the hero’s impact and the Filipino community's contributions to the province. BC Attorney General Niki Sharma and Vancouver City officials, led by Acting Mayor Lenny Zhou, were also present at the Block Party event and read the Lapu-Lapu Day provincial and city government proclamations, respectively. The City of Vancouver also supported the occasion with the lighting of City Hall and the Burrard bridge in Vancouver.
The day was filled with a variety of activities that catered to all ages, including a community parade, basketball tournament, craft market, fashion show, live music, and cultural performances that spotlighted Filipino traditions and talents. Meanwhile, food vendors offered a taste of Filipino cuisine, from adobo to sisig, to the long lines of waiting customers.
Through music, dance, and cuisine, attendees were able to experience the warmth and hospitality that define Filipino culture. The opening program was hosted by OMNI News reporter Rhea Santos and Global News anchor Jason Pires, both of Filipino heritage. END
