05 December 2023, Vancouver - The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, in partnership with the Vancouver Police Department - Women's Personal Safety Team (VPD-WPST), organized a Workshop on Women's Personal Safety on 01 December 2023, as part of its commitment to the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW).

The primary objective of the workshop was to equip women with tools and knowledge that can be easily learned and remembered, even by those with no prior self-defense training.

Consul General Arlene Magno, in her remarks, said that the fight against violence is ongoing and it requires continuous education, advocacy, and a commitment to challenging societal norms.

The resource speakers from the VPD-WPST, Inspector Colleen Yee and Sergeant Alice Yee, shared personal safety concepts such as awareness, use of intuition, prevention and fighting back in the face of unavoidable violence.  They also discussed the signs of domestic violence early on in a relationship.

The 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, is observed annually as mandated by Proclamation 1172 s. 2006. The recurring theme (2022-2027), “UNITEd for a VAW-Free Philippines”, aims to highlight the powerful impact of combining individual efforts towards a collaborative and united thrust towards a VAW-free Philippines.
