“MANA: CONVERSATIONS WITH FILIPINO CULTURE BEARERS” – A CONVERSATION WITH JOEL AND HENIA BLUNTO

The T’Boli are traditional dwellers of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. They are known for many skills, including weaving the famous t’nalak, beading (tmool lmimet), and brass-casting (temwel). The art of temwel is an old tradition of brass-casting using wax and clay which has been passed through generations of T’Boli.

Joel and Henia learned temwel from their elders and established Sesotunawa, a community enterprise that brings products from Lake Sebu to other parts of the Philippines and the world. “Sesotunawa” comes from the T’Boli words “sesotu” (to make one) and “nawa” (spirit). This embodies the T’Boli community ethos of peace, compassion, and cooperation.

We talk to Joel and Henia about their heritage and how they share this with those outside of their community. They impart to us their hope that people continue to learn about the T’Boli and value the traditions and beliefs behind their distinctive works.
