From Maple to Mangoes: Filipino-Canadian Youth Reconnect with Heritage in Successful Inaugural 2026 Canada YouLeaD Immersion

VANCOUVER, CANADA (03 September 2026) — Five representatives from British Columbia recently completed a transformative seven-day journey in the Philippines under the Commission on Filipinos Overseas’ (CFO) flagship Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD) program, held from 11 to 17 August 2026. Organized in close collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, this inaugural session—themed “From Maple to Mangoes: Finding Home in Two Worlds”—marked a significant milestone in bridging diaspora youth with their homeland.

The delegation, comprising youth leaders Beatrice Correa, Diego Cloma, and Joel Malang, accompanied by chaperones Kim Carvajal and Rosette Correa, took part in an itinerary designed to deepen their understanding of Philippine history, governance, living traditions, and sustainable community development.

Dialogue with National Leaders

The journey began with high-level civic engagements, starting with a meeting with Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri (Chairperson, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations), where delegates discussed initiatives to strengthen Philippines-Canada ties, observed a Senate plenary session, and received a formal invitation for Himig Kabataan Cultural Society participants to sing the national anthem at the Senate during their planned visit in August 2027. They next met with Representative Anne Garcia-Matibag (Chairperson, House Committee on Women and Gender Equality) to share their youth advocacies and tour the House Plenary Hall. The delegation then paid a courtesy call on CFO Undersecretary Ma. Arlene S. Borja and PMD Chief Marita Del Rosario-Apattad, where they discussed the role of diaspora youth in nation-building, presented their platform goals for Filipino-Canadian youth organizations, and received CFO Certificates of Commendation for their dedication to promoting Filipino culture.

Living Culture and Heritage

The participants explored Philippine history through guided visits to the Presidential Museum at Teus Mansion, the National Museum of Anthropology, Intramuros and the historic town of Taal, Batangas, where they visited the ancestral homes of revolutionary figures Marcela Agoncillo and Doña Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio. Culture came alive through hands-on experiences, including a traditional sandal-crafting workshop led by local sapateros in Marikina, a kamayan binalot lunch, and an immersive gastronomy crawl through Binondo.

Community Immersion and Sustainability

Extending their immersion to Zambales, the delegates spent two days learning directly from local communities. They learned traditional bamboo fire-making and joined forest reforestation efforts with an indigenous Aeta community in Subic. At the Sambali Beach Farm in Botolan, they studied biochar technology, microbial farming, and organic agriculture—offering actionable insights for delegates pursuing fields in biochemistry, engineering, sustainable tourism, and culinary arts.

Building a Lasting Legacy

The week-long journey concluded in Manila with a visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts to view Juan Luna’s iconic Spoliarium, followed by a farewell dinner celebrating the program's success. Returning to Canada with a renewed sense of pride and identity, the youth delegates represent the vanguard of an expanding network of young diaspora leaders dedicated to promoting Filipino culture abroad.

Building on the success of this first iteration, the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver is preparing to expand participation for future cycles.
