Philippines launches Chairmanship of ASEAN

18 January 2017 - The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver is pleased to inform the general public that the Philippines’ Chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was launched on 15 January 2017 at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City, led by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

The President, in his keynote remarks, stated that the launch is an event to renew the enduring ties that bind all ASEAN Member States and an occasion to renew the shared aspirations and values that will lead ASEAN to the future.  Inspired by this year’s theme, “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” the President announced that he considers everyone as partners for change in pursuit of the following priorities:  to place ASEAN peoples at the core; work for regional peace and stability; pursue maritime security and cooperation; advance inclusive, innovation-led growth; strengthen ASEAN resiliency; and promote ASEAN as a model of regionalism and as a global player.

The President called on all Filipinos, the ASEAN Member States, and ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners to help towards making ASEAN achieve its own significant role in effecting positive change for the world.

The national launch was attended by former Presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, House Speaker Pantaleon D. Alvarez, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, members of the Cabinet, members of the diplomatic Corps, officials of government departments and agencies, local government officials, and representatives from the private sector and civil society organizations.  Secretary of Foreign Affairs Perfecto R. Yasay, Jr. delivered the opening remarks with his affirmation  of PH’s steadfast support in the last 50 years and commitment to ASEAN solidarity and centrality in the next half-century and beyond.

During the launch, the President also unveiled the PH ASEAN Chairmanship Special Stamp and Commemorative Coin.  The PH Chairmanship Theme Song, “ASEAN Spirit,” composed by National Artist Virgilio S. Almario and Professor Josefino Toledo, was performed for the first time by Mr. Jonathan Badon.
